This Divided Card
Science fiction author and authority Orson Scott Card has a new book out that interests me a bit, since I often follow contemporary politics. In Empire, he follows the possibilities of a divided future America. From his website, Hatrack River:
The American Empire has grown too fast, and the fault lines at home are stressed to the breaking point. The war of words between Right and Left has collapsed into a shooting war, though most people just want to be left alone...When the American dream shatters into violence, who can hold the people and the government together? An interesting podcast with Card (and his thoughts) can be found here, at Politics Central.
In other news, the future film version of Card's famous Ender's Game, remains in "development hell." If you want my honest opinion, thinking I know a little about the man, I think it's largely Card's fault (rumor-monger that I am). But then, it's also his prerogative. For some (older) thoughts on how he would have the movie: look no further. Kind of weirds me out, his taste. Not what I would go for, as much as I love Card's fiction. But then, he does admit to loving Kaufman. I must admit I find Card elusive. Still.
Now here's a thought. In the rush to make the best of Mormon movies, will anyone ever coordinate with the likes of some of our better and/or better-known authors, such as Card, Anne Perry, Dave Wolverton, Tracy Hickman, Lee Martin/Anne Wingate, Shannon Hale, and so forth? (Actually, I think the better question is, in a free market, why don't we turn to valuable non-Mormon authors, and think outside the sphere?)
